27 Scouts and Explorer Scouts from across the District took part in the County Explorer camp over the weekend of 19 – 21 February; and yes it was cold and it did snow; but everyone had a time they will remember for a while.

Barugh and Darton Scouts in the Peak District
Members of Barugh and Darton Scouts view the heights of the Peak District from the summit of Mam Tor.
The Scouts worked on the cycle trail in Millers Dale with Park Rangers, clearing scrub and undergrowth to inprove the habitat for insects and birds, and then trekked in the Castleton area.

Barugh Scouts Practice Emergency Aid
Barugh Scouts get down to Emergency Aid training at their meeting. Demonstrating CPR, otherwise know as Mouth-to-Mouth Resussitation to their patrols, the patrol leaders used training dummies RessusiAndy and RessusiAnnie to show how to give rescue breaths and chest conpressions in case of an emergency.

Barugh Scouts in North America
In mid December, Barugh Scouts went to North America, but they didn’t have to cross the Atlantic; instead Jack, George, Tom, Matthew, and Harry trekked around the area named “North America” on the Pennine moors above Langsett reservoir, enjoying a day in the winter sunshine.

Then down came the rain
Scouts from Barugh Scout group and Barbarian Explorers experienced the extremes of the weather in the Peak District while scrub-bashing last weekend.
Working with the Peak National park ranger service they cleared scrubs and trees near Thornhill to improve the regeneration of widflowers and habitat.
Saturday was fine and sunny but on Sunday the heavy rain tested their endurance to the full.
The group will return to the area later in December and in February to complete the work before the spring.

Scouts from Barugh and Darton reconstruct the footpath on Mam Tor in the Peak District
Working with the National Park Ranger Service, the Scouts worked on the northern edge of the famous “Shivering Mountain ” repairing the erosion from recent torrential rains. The weekend wasn’t all work however, the group took time to walk to the summit and enjoy the view across Edale from Rushup Edge to Kinderscout, and Lose Hill.

Scouts clear pond in the Park or operation Great Crested Newt
Barugh Scouts, Darton Scouts and Barbarian Explorer Scouts get stuck into a pond in the Peak District.

Local Scouts assist Peak District Conservation Rangers with the clearance of a dew pond on the outskirts of Hartington, as part of an EU Operation. The project hopes to create a network of ponds suitable for re-colonisation by Great Crested Newts, an endangered species. The Scouts hope to return to the site next spring to review the results of their efforts.

Josh, Lee, Jake and Ross, accompanyed by their scout leader, explored the woodland trail alongside the dams made famous as the training site for the Dambusters Raid.

Working in the Hope Valley near Castleton during a conservation project
The scouts ( in their orange/red boiler suits ) and the explorer scouts ( in blue/grey ) worked with Peak Disrict park rangers and other volunteers to clear hawthorne and other scrub from an area of rare grassland, encouraging the regeneration of wild flowers and fauna. Part on a 5 year project undertaken by national park volunteers with the co-operation of local landowners.

Two members are awarded their Chief Scout’s Gold Award
Two members are awarded their Chief Scout's Gold Award
Two members of Barugh Scouts receive their top scout awards – “Chief Scout’s Gold award” at a recent meeting. To complete the award, Nathan Bellamy fron Higham and Robert Watson from Mapplewell undertook 5 group challenges (Outdoors, Adventure, Fitness, Community and Creative) as well as indervidual projects and training. Both have now become members of Barbarian Explorer Scouts.

Made from plastic bottles, card, paper, glue, paint and varnish: and powered by water pressure, the rackets climbed into the evening sky at Low Barugh last thursday, entitling the Scouts to wear the Model Makers badge

Scrub Bashing in the Peak District


Barugh Scouts spent a weekend with the Peak District National park rangers, restoring moorland in the Goyt valley. The group stayed at the Marsh Farm residential centre, near Leek in Staffordshire and took part in a major project to clear introduced species from the moors in this popular area of the white peak.

More Conservation Work by Barugh Scouts


Barugh Scouts finished improvements to the footpath at Rowesley in the Peak District, when they returned with National Park Conservation Rangers to complete the re-instatement of the footpath surface, installing drains and edging, at a popular woodland route near Bakewell.
